Roof Boots: What They Are and Why You Should Care About Them

Your roof has many different components that work together to protect your home from the elements. While you’re probably familiar with terms like shingles and flashing, there’s one important component of your roof that you may not know about yet–roof boots. Today, Colonial Remodeling, a top local  certified roofing contractor, explains what you need to know about roof boots.

Roof Boots Defined

A roof boot is a type of flashing installed to give extra waterproofing protection to vulnerable areas of the roof, like your pipe vents. To understand how they function, imagine your plumbing system. Pipe vents are in place to let in the air into waste lines and create the pressure necessary in moving wastewater out of your home and into sewer lines. Typically, these pipe vents run up from bathrooms and kitchens, penetrating the roof.

Why You Should Care About Roof Boots

Like other parts of the roof, roof boots contract and expand as outdoor temperatures change. This makes it possible for a roof boot to shift, crack or peel due to deterioration. Unfortunately, when roof boots move, they expose the pipe vents they cover, letting in the water when it rains, which can result in a leaky roof. It’s important to make sure that your roof boots are in great shape at all times.

Fortunately, this is easy with reliable roofing services. The sooner you catch roofing problems, the easier they are to address.
