Porch

A porch is a platform attached to the house. It extends the living area and is large enough to accommodate furniture such as chairs, a coffee table and perhaps even a couch. It can be screened-in to keep insects out, or enclosed in glass for year-round use, similar to a sunroom. A “lanai” is a Hawaiian term that generally refers to porch, patio or balcony.

Deck

A deck is similar to a porch, except that it is usually built without a cover. Outdoor decks can be built with multiple levels or tiers, using wood or composite, and raised several inches from the ground. A deck can be designed as a sprawling, all-weather living area.

Patio

A patio has the same function as a deck, except that it’s built at ground level rather than at an elevation. Built with a concrete slab or an area of pavers, a patio can accommodate heavier furniture and requires less maintenance than a deck. Patio doors are used for entry and egress. Patio covers are usually installed separate from the roofing system.

Portico

A portico is a small roof-like arch installed over the front entry door. In addition to providing shelter from the sun and rain, a portico creates visual interest that can help boost the home’s curb appeal. Porticoes are typically seen on Colonial home styles.

Veranda

Verandas are typically found in Southern architecture. A veranda is a large, open porch with a roof and railing that can sometimes extend around the sides of the house. It is sometimes referred to as a “gallery.”
