Improving Your Home’s Exterior With a Custom Portico – Part 1: How Adding a Portico to Your Home Benefits You
A portico is a covered entrance, supported by columns, that leads to a home or building’s front door. This design element was widely used in ancient Greece, and has since influenced the architecture of many cultures. Some prime examples of porticos include the Greek Parthenon, the Roman Pantheon, the University of London, and the United States Capitol. Today, porticos grace the entry doors of millions of homes across the country, but how exactly does a portico benefit you?
- Porticos help protect your home. Adding a portico to your home protects your front door from wear and tear. Constant exposure to extreme sunlight and heavy rainfall can result in cracks, fading, warping and other damage to your entryway. With a new portico, however, you no longer have to worry as much. A portico helps shield your door and porch from harmful UV light and excessive moisture, letting you avoid the stress and the expense of frequent maintenance. Porticos can protect your home’s interior, as well. By filtering the sunlight entering your rooms via the front windows, they can prevent fading on your furniture, walls and flooring.
- Porticos are functional. Aside from protection, a new portico can provide a more pleasing connection between your home’s interior and the outdoors. It can also shelter you or incoming guests from inclement weather. You’ll find just how much value a sturdy portico can bring to your home the next time you pause by your door to wipe off your muddy shoes or shake off lingering raindrops from your umbrella or jacket.
- Porticos enhance your home’s exterior. Because a portico is a highly visible design element, it can help your home stand out. It gives an immediate visual impression to your guests, creating a lovely focal point that adds a warm, welcoming look to your home. In fact, a portico can accentuate the finer details of your home’s exterior, from the trim you chose to the type of ambient light your entryway provides.
To fully enjoy the many benefits a new portico can provide your home, you’ll need to cover all the bases. In the second installment of our three-part blog, we discuss the factors you need to consider when investing in a new portico.
